We are thrilled to announce that Austria has officially joined ECCSEL ERIC! This marks another significant step forward in strengthening Europe’s research infrastructure for Carbon Capture, Transport, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS), CDR, low carbon energy storage (LCES) and geothermal energy systems.
A new member unlocked: Welcome, Austria!
A major milestone for both Austria and ECCSEL ERIC.
Formally approved at last week's ECCSEL ERIC General Assembly and announced by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (Bundesministerium für Innovation, Mobilität und Infrastruktur), Austria has officially joined ECCSEL ERIC—strengthening its role in European research and innovation focused on one of the defining challenges of the energy transition: how do we manage CO₂ emissions on the path to climate neutrality?
Through its membership, Austria gains access to Europe's largest research infrastructure network for CCUS, Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), Low-Carbon Energy Systems, Geothermal Energy, and Underground Energy Storage, comprising more than 160 research and demonstration facilities. At the same time, Austrian research and technology infrastructures become part of this European network, increasing their international visibility and creating new opportunities for collaborative research, innovation, and technology transfer across Europe.
Austria brings outstanding scientific excellence, world-class research infrastructure, strong industrial partnerships, and fresh momentum to Europe's carbon management ecosystem—helping strengthen both research and industrial competitiveness.
A warm welcome to Austria, represented by the Climate and Energy Fund, and to the broader Austrian community of research and industry partners, including AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) , Technische Universität Wien, Technische Universität Graz, Montanuniversität Leoben, GeoSphere Austria, OMV, RAG Austria AG, Alpacem, Wien Energie GmbH, and voestalpine.
Together, we are building an even stronger European Research Infrastructure to accelerate innovation and deliver the technologies needed for a climate-neutral future.
Welcome to the ECCSEL family, Austria!
