Press Release - Germany joins ECCSEL ERIC
July 2025 – Norway – The European Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratory Infrastructure (ECCSEL ERIC) is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of its recent General Assembly meeting, held in Denmark. This gathering marked a significant milestone in ECCSEL ERIC’s growth, highlighting the continued expansion and dynamism of Europe’s leading research infrastructure network, dedicated to supporting climate technologies.
The meeting featured productive discussions, a review of key achievements, and the strategic adoption of an expanded scope to fully embrace not only Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), but also Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), Low-Carbon Energy Systems (LCES) and Geothermal (GT). These developments reinforce ECCSEL ERIC’s role as a central enabler of European efforts towards net-zero emissions.
A key highlight of the meeting was the formal approval and warm welcome of Germany as a new Member State. Germany brings a strong alliance of eight prestigious national research institutes into the ECCSEL ERIC community:
The network has also welcomed 19 new research facilities, contributed by both existing and newly joined research facility owners.
As a result of these approvals, ECCSEL ERIC now comprises:
This expansion marks a major step forward for ECCSEL ERIC, significantly enhancing Europe’s research capacity in CCUS, CDR, and LCES. It demonstrates our continued commitment to enabling cutting-edge research and innovation that supports the EU’s climate goals.
