Press Release - Germany joins ECCSEL ERIC

July 2025 – Norway The European Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratory Infrastructure (ECCSEL ERIC) is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of its recent General Assembly meeting, held in Denmark. This gathering marked a significant milestone in ECCSEL ERIC’s growth, highlighting the continued expansion and dynamism of Europe’s leading research infrastructure network, dedicated to supporting climate technologies.

The meeting featured productive discussions, a review of key achievements, and the strategic adoption of an expanded scope to fully embrace not only Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), but also Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), Low-Carbon Energy Systems (LCES) and Geothermal (GT). These developments reinforce ECCSEL ERIC’s role as a central enabler of European efforts towards net-zero emissions.

A key highlight of the meeting was the formal approval and warm welcome of Germany as a new Member State. Germany brings a strong alliance of eight prestigious national research institutes into the ECCSEL ERIC community:

  • GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences
  • Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
  • Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ)
  • Technical University of Darmstadt (TUDA)
  • Ruhr University Bochum (RUB)
  • University of Stuttgart
  • RWE
  • Everllence (MAN)

The network has also welcomed 19 new research facilities, contributed by both existing and newly joined research facility owners.

As a result of these approvals, ECCSEL ERIC now comprises:

  • 7 Member States (up from 6)
  • 46 Research Facility Owners (up from 35)
  • 132 Research Facilities (up from 113)

This expansion marks a major step forward for ECCSEL ERIC, significantly enhancing Europe’s research capacity in CCUS, CDR, and LCES. It demonstrates our continued commitment to enabling cutting-edge research and innovation that supports the EU’s climate goals.

About ECCSEL ERIC
